Hi There. Whilst carrying out an upgrade, Trend informed me I has another security service running. It also advised I would have to remove this before the new installation could be carried out. It highlighted Windows Defender was in use and then cancelled the installation, leaving me with no Trend package installed. I have reinstalled Trend Micro Maximum Security, but Windows Defender is still running too. How can I turn off Windows Defender?

I have a home built PC running Windows 10.

Hi weemick.

Thank you for contacting Trend Micro Community!

I understand that when you were trying to install your Trend Micro, it informed you there is another security software running on your computer and it was the Windows Defender.

Usually, upon installing Trend Micro Security, it automatically disable Windows Defender. But, in your case Trend Micro didn't disable your Windows Defender, here is the step on how you can disable your Windows Defender.
  1. Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Runcommand.
  2. Type gpedit.msc and click OK to open the Local Group Policy Editor.
  3. Browse the following path:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Defender

  4. On the right, double-click Turn off Windows Defender
  5. Select Enabled to disable Windows Defender.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.
Feel free to reply to this thread to update us on your progress.

Thank you and have a great day!

Since the last update, I can't get the main console up. It just shows a white circle saying trend Micro Maximum security. Disappears after approx 1 minute. Also at one stage a panel came up saying trend Micro was turned off & so was windows Defender. I run Windows 10. How can I check I'm secure?

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Maximum Security Doesn't Need Windows 10 Defender, Correct?.

Hello,
I'm using Maximum Security on a Windows 10 machine. After an update, the OS has enabled/activated Defender.
As I understand it, with Trend Micro I don't need Defender. Is this correct?
If so, what steps do I take to disable Defender? Defender's Real Time protection setting is enabled, but also greyed out, making it impossible to deactivate.
Thanks,
Karen

After renewing TrendMicro and Windows Defender came up. It said Defender was turned off, that my PC was at risk and that Defender should be restarted. But it could not be restarted.

Hi gaithoras,

Tom Emmelot is right. Your Windows Defender is already disabled. You can see it on that it is blank on the Status. If it is running on your computer, it should say Started.

Hope this answer your question.

Regards,
~Kaye
