Windows 7 update does not work

I am using a Del Latitude E6430 running Windows 7 and the windows updater gets hung up trying to do updates.  Windows 7 won't update, "checking for updates" stuck .  I saw a reference to http://www.wsusoffline.net/docs/ but I am very wary about using third party software fixes as I don't want to get a virus.  Anyone know any solutions, or if wsusoffline is safe to use?
