Hi all, I've been hearing a lot about VPNs and am wondering if I should use one, which one or choices of such that would be, and are they compatible with Trend Micro Security? I'd like to hear about anyone's experience with these and recommendations. Thanks in advance.

-I'm not a Trend Micro representative, but I like to give you some suggestion-

I'm actually using the AVM routers VPN.
VPN may be usefull if you need to have a 'secure channel' between networks (your office and your home via theInternet, for example).

If you are used to connect remotly to your home or to your office, for example using a remote connection software, so it will be better to use a VPN instead.

There are a lot of VPN softwares. I'm using ShrewSoft to connect my FritzBox remotly.

Thanks Max! I have no real knowledge of them except that a good one will not allow tracking. Then again, tracking isn't much for me to worry about since I'm not a "subversive" or anything of that nature and sites I access are almost all news and one or two television networks. I'm hardwired into my modem with both desktop and laptop (someone was "piggybacking", so I turned off wireless). So I guess I don't need to worry.

Wood, if you're using your network locally, You are Your security.
From outside it, VPN may be  a good friend.

Anyway, Wood, if you need assistance for Your LAN security, both me and Trend Micro are here!

Hello woodartisan55 and Max Slo

As for the compatibility with the Trend Micro security, there were reports from our support team that users had troubles updating the Trend Micro security. This may be caused by rerouting of the the information downloaded for our servers to the machine that you are using.

For this matter, we just simply ask our clients to temporarily disable the VPN then attempt to download the update again and once it all set, they can revert the VPN setting again.

I hope this helps.

All the best,

Trend Micro Home Users Community

Thank you both very much. I'm not certain at all that I have need of using a VPN, so I'll probably do without at this time.

I guess a lot depends on the internet controls, or lack thereof, by the U.S. which would make me consider using one. For now, all seems well.
