Very Disappointed in Malware protection

Long time subscriber to Trend, but the program let me down. I was infected with an advertising malware and that kept randomly opening links to different sites.Trend did not prevent the infection or even identify it. Someone suggested to me Malwarebytes. The free demo immediately identified the infection, isolated and removed it. Needless to say, I will not be renewing Trend.

Hi Ted Hovick,

Sorry to hear that. One reason why Trend Micro did not detect it is that Adware is a software designed to throw advertisements up on your screen, most often within a web browser. It does happen that legitimate software applications do use online advertising, with ads that are typically bundled within the program and that display in ways the program developer specified. Adwares are like potentially unwanted applications in a sense. To know more about this, you may refer to this link: Uninstalling Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUA).

Another reason is that each antivirus software has their own set of policies embedded in their systems. That's the reason why they have different detections as well, and Trend Micro has set its own for detecting patterns on your computer as well based on the samples that were thoroughly tested by our malware experts on Trend Micro Laboratories from time to time.

Regards,
Mac

Adware could be annoying to many users but is not inherently malicious, it's categorized as a grayware.
Trend Micro Security will detect an adware if there is a malicious/suspicious behavior or it has a malicious component. If you think you are infected, you can always contact Support Team and have your PC checked or help you set up a more aggressive detection from Trend Micro Security.

Free antivirus scanners usually have aggressive detection, this can lead to False Positives.

If you don't want any kind of adware, malicious or not, you can also install adware blocker on your browsers. I actually use one :)
