Trend Micro scans as soon as I start my Dell laptop. It takes over the entire computer and nothing else can happen until it is done.

Trend Micro settings seem to be automatic and stop any other actions from taking place until completed.  Auto scan starts on system startup and I turn off the computer over night and it starts up again immediate when I restart.  I have adjusted the scan settings and not much has changed.  The choices are to have auto scan on or completely off.  What am I missing?
Older Dell laptop with W7 Home, Firefox, no e-mail, Office products which I rarely use.  Currently auto scan is off which means the icon in the startup portion of the start bar has an exclamation point, really should I be in charge of how auto scan governs my computer?Thanks

I'm sorry, I'm out of 'office' so I have not my TM in front of me. 
So in case another friend from TM correct me... 

Disabling Real-Time protection is not helpful: on demand or automatic scan works anyway also if Real Time is stopped. 

Please, check at the setting -> Scheduled Scan -> that Smart Scan is not selected and that any other option in that page is not selected. 

This is the first thing I can think at this time. 

I really do not remember if there is an option to scan at boot and I'm in flight til next saturday! :)

Again, unfortunately it is normal that an old PC is very slow during an antivirus scan, and this is not a very issue. 
I can suggest you to set under Settings -> Other Settings - > System Startup -> and select Extra Performance. This may help your old Dell to boot better.
