I installed Antivirus+ and, at the recommendation of the Microsoft technician who sold it to me, turned off Windows Defender. However, this made said Windows Defender unhappy, and it wants to be turned back on.
1. the technician said that Antivirus + is a Microsoft product (or recommended by MS). Is this true?
2. Does Antivirus + replace the functions of Windows Defender?
3. Would it be advisable to run BOTH Antivirus + AND Windows Defender (why)?

Thank you for purchasing Trend Micro product! For your questions, the following answers are for your reference:
1) Antivirus+ is a Trend Micro security product, and not a Microsoft product. We're a Microsoft partner so it's likely they recommended our product ;-)

2) Yes, Antivirus+ can definitely replace Windows Defender. Here's the support document which explains features and settings of Antivirus +:
Features and Settings
3) When you install Antivirus+, it will automatically turn off the Windows Defender to avoid conflict, since Windows Defender is Microsoft's built-in antivirus protection. Although Windows Defender is turned off, you are still protected from threats by your Trend Micro program.

For your situation, it's possible the step recommended by Microsoft technician conflicted with the auto Windows Defender disable step of Antivirus+. We suggest you to un-install and re-install Trend Micro Antivirus+ Security to reset the program and patterns, and allow Antivirus+ to auto disable Windows Defender. Here's a reference doc to for the steps:

Please let us know if we were able to answer your questions. Thank you!
