Hello martha_cusack ! Welcome to the Community!

Thank you so much Tom Emmelot for the input.

To further clarify, we would like to know if what update are you referring to. Is this an update from the Trend Micro program or from the Windows Operating System that you are using?

If in case this is more related to your Operating System, contacting Microsoft for more help should be your next step. But if not, and it is more related to the Trend Micro program, kindly provide us more details about your computer's  environment like What TM version are you using, the Operating System you are running (Windows 7, 8 or 10).

I hope this helps.

I have the same problem on my Windows 10 PC.  The Trends notification icon continually shows "installing an update".  When I shut down the computer I get the message Trends update is running do you still want to turn off the computer. I have reinstalled Trends but still get the "installing an update" message continually.  Can you help?

Hello margbri

Apologies for the delayed response. Let me continue helping you on this issue.

You can try following the steps below so we can resolve this case.
Step 1: Restart the Components of the Trend Micro Program.
Disabling or enabling your Trend Micro Security software

Try to open and check for updates manually after doing this step.

Step 2: Run the Permission Tool.
Using the Trend Micro Permission Tool

Then check for an update again.

Step 3: If the issue still persists, you can try to reinstall the Trend Micro program.
- Use our Remnant File Remover tool to uninstall the program.
- Install the latest version of the program after the restart.

Please let us know how it will go.

I hope this helps.

Have a wonderful day!
