Hi douglent. Just another Trend Micro user here. Here's an answer from one of the Trend Micro techs dealing with the same problem from a few months ago:

The Trend Micro program, just like any other software will of course, use your computer's resources in order for it to carry out the tasks it is supposed to do especially when you're running a Full Scan. Remember, Full Scan will check your entire drive so it is basically a heavy task for your computer and it will also take less than an hour or maybe even more depending on the situation. Although,if it becomes a problem, we may be able to create a workaround for it. Please follow the steps below:

STEP 1: Run the Remnant File Remover Tool

STEP 2: Run the Permission Tool
Please click here todownload the tool

STEP 3: Clear the Temp Folder

  • Press the Windows button on your keyboard and letter "R" both at the same time to open the Run console.
  • Once the Run Console is open, type: %temp%
  • Click OK
  • Doing that will open the "Temp" folder. Please delete all files inside that folder

STEP 4: InstallTrend Micro Maximum Security 2018

 Thank you woodartisan55 for providing a solution to our new friend.

While reinstalling the Trend Micro Program will fix the problem, it is also best to find out first why the problem occurred in the first place.
Here are some pointers that we can check in order to find the root cause.

- Check if you have another Antivirus program installed on your computer.
  Other Antivirus programs will exhaust or use the same resources as our program will. This will prevent our program to do its purpose as the other antivirus program might block Trend Micro scanning

- Installing Potentially Unwanted Applications
  Like other Antivirus programs, some of the Freeware that you might have installed on your computer affected the security program. It is best you check the Programs and Features portion of your computer and see if you have programs that you are not familiar with and remove it from your system.

The Trend Micro Security was corrupted due to a failed update.
  This can be easily resolved by attempting to do an update manually. If this fails, you may reinstall the program again by following the steps woodartisan55 provided above.
