Hello all,

I have a problem that may have been a hacking attempt on my PC.
I run Windows 7 with Trend Micro Maximum Security on a HP Pavilion Elite (very old machine) and had an episode that troubled me.

I noted that my usual icon for Internect Connection turned to the bar system with a little star; my windows and trend protection was disabled; and I could surf the web all I wanted, but could not find my serial number to activate the protection. I tried going to the web support; it could not find my account.

This all happened last night. Since then, I have turned off my machine and restarted it; everything went back to semi normal: security is on, icon for internet connection is stil the one with the prong, the computer screen and the blue circle. I can surf the net, but this all just leaves a bad taste in my mouth; something's fishy to me.

Any help?

Hi @mersaultetmoi and welcome to Trend Micro Community!

Thank you for posting your concern here.

There are multiple symptoms that we can check if a machine has been hacked. Some examples below:

1. There are unwanted programs that have been installed on your PC without your knowledge including toolbars on your web browsers.
2. When the computer is doing things automatically such as opening a program automatically, sending an email to a different addresses, copying files to other locations without your permission.
3. Security program has been disabled. (Though this might just be a performance issue of the antivirus program on your PC)

To prevent possible hacking incident on your PC, you may do the following advises below:

1. Uninstall unwanted programs from the Control Panel. You may check the list of the programs installed on your PC to see if there are any new programs that has been recently installed on your PC or if there are programs that you no longer need on your PC. Just be careful on deleting important applications on your PC to prevent further damage.

2. Reset your browser settings to remove the toolbars installed by the malicious programs on your PC.

3. Scan your PC using Trend Micro and enable the Trend Micro toolbar on your web browsers.

4. Keep all your programs including your operating system and your Trend Micro program updated.
