Poor computer performance on antivirus startup

I have a low powered netbook running Internet security 10. On startup the antivirus software looks for and applies updates. This drags my Netbook performance way down until it has finished downloading applying updates. Is there any way I can stop this automatic function which seems to be performed onstartup and every subsequent three hours. I would like to seek and apply updates when I choose to (when I am not actively using the netbook - ie during idle time, not when I'm waiting to use it following startup). I have been unable to locate a menu function that allows me to control when updates are downloaded and applied. Thanks

Thank you for reporting this issue.  I understand that you want to disable your automatic updates of your Internet security. To set a proper expectation, Trend Micro has no feature to disable automatic updates because this is one of the features of our program to make your computer always protected and ensure the program has the latest and updated software logic & patterns so it will detect the latest threats circulating in the internet.

For your poor computer performance issue, could you please check your computer meets the system requirements or not? Here's an online help doc should help you:
Installing Internet Security 10 (2016) - Not Sure If You Meet The System Requirements?

If your computer meets all the above requirements, we suggest you to add resource-intensive programs to Internet security's Exception List, so Internet security will not real-time scan the programs while opening or running. You can download and use Trend Micro Performance Tuning Tool by following the below help page to easily add resource-intensive programs to Exception List:
