How often Trend Micro updates?

My Trend says "There are no new updates / Last update 12/4/2016" , however if I check "Component version" all of the are from 12/2/2016 (2 days old) except Smart Query Filter which is from 12/4/2012

So, which module is the "Signature database" and how often does it update?

Hi Claudiu,

To answer your question, Your Trend Micro Security, by default, automatically downloads the updates for you. It constantly checks online for security updates to stop new threats every 3 hours. These are then applied to your program's modules to improve its performance.

If there are no available updates, it will check again after 3 hours. If there is an available update, Trend Micro Security will download and install the latest virus patterns/ signatures/definition, and then will update the time of the last update.

The "signature database" you mentioned is "Smart Scan Agent pattern". However Trend Micro Security's update is not only virus patterns/ signatures/definition, but also other components (e.g program updates and patches, bug fixes and other security enhancements to ensure that your Trend Micro Security software is well-armed and optimized in protecting your devices). If you are not sure you are getting the latest security updates from our servers and installing it to your Trend Micro Security software, you can do a manual update:

Using the system tray icon
  1. At the bottom right-hand corner of your desktop, right-click on the Trend Micro system tray icon.
  2. Select Check for Program Updates.
  3. The About Your Software window will appear and will automatically check for available updates.
Using the main console of your Trend Micro Security
  1. Open the main console of your Trend Micro Security software.
  2. Click Identity then select About the Software.
  3. The About Your Software window will appear and will automatically check for available updates.

Hope this answers your question. Thank you.

Hi TM_Linda,

Thank you for your answer!

Today is 12/5/2016 , 7:00am.

From all modules specified in "Components" only Smart Query Filter is from 12/5; Smart Scan Agent Pattern is 12/4, few other components are 12/4 and the rest of them are 12/2 , so 3 days old.

Even though Trend updates every 3 hours it seems like in fact the " malware database" is one day old, which is somehow disappointing.

Major competitors have the update set hourly and they do update hourly , plus streaming updates (Avast) .

Hi Claudiu, thank you for the reply.

As the above we've explained, the components will be updated automaticly by every 3 hours. But if the cloud server detected the component which is already the newest version, it won't provide any update for any single feature.

For your update frequency concern, please don't be worried, Trend Micro will keep tracking your components and make it the newsest version if your internet is connected. Also, when the suspicious file is detected, Trend Micro Security will connect to the cloud to check if it is malicious.

Please let us know if you have other questions or encounter any problems at any time. Thanks!

I installed the software last night on my desktop computer and is still "installing an update". The installation of my laptop computer has completed; so, I'm curious if there's a problem with the desktop computer installation?

Hello JMOORE59,

Please let us know if Tom Emmelot's suggestion works for you, if not we will be separating your comment into another post for the topic's relevance.

You can also try restarting the components of the program by disabling and enabling it,  you can check the steps on the link below:
Disabling or enabling your Trend Micro Security software

I hope you have a wonderful day!

Tom Emmelot's suggestions were absolutely useless in every possible way.  I spoke with a Geeksquad associate who advised that the most likely culprit was a simultaneous Microsoft update occurring at the same time the TM software was being installed.  So, I simply uninstalled and reinstalled the TM software which works perfectly now on my desktop computer.

Hi JMOORE59

Can you tell me why you react with a question (which is already a year old) and the question has nothing to do with the subject. For your question, tell us OS, TM version and i think a reboot give also a answer, after reboot TM can go on with the install.

Kind regards,
Tom
