Have had repeated Ransomware in spite of being told I am covered for Ransomware

In spite of Trend telling me I have Ransomware protection, I have repeatedly been a victim of at least two versions of ransomware.  One gives me an """out'''' by selecting things on the screen and then being able to bypass ransomeware.  Today I was given a locked screen, and only way out was to 'hard' shut down computer and restart, and not opening all the tabs in Chrome.  i NEED TO KNOW if there is something I need to 'set' to prevent this problem.
