I keep getting Google Chrome Critical ERROR and it locks up my computer.  I googled it and it appears to be a malware.  I thought my TrendMicro Internet sescurity should  catch this but it doesn't seem to.

Hi ehlersgrub

Welcome to TM Home users Community, a public site where volunteers try to help each-other , also there are TM Employees that can give answers, that is only at working hours. I am just a volunteer!

Hi ehlersgrub,

Looks like a scam to me. By any chance, does the message look like the below screenshot?

This scam is a called tech support scam, which behaves in a way of making you believe that there is something that needs to be fixed on your system, will ask you to call a fake support hotline, access your computer remotely and will pretend they are fixing the "issue", then they will charge you a huge amount of money for their "service". They've been going around as of late and our legal team is working on shutting down these scam numbers and website. To assist us in this process, we would appreciate it if you can give us details of the message you received such as screenshot, phone number, etc.

Awaiting your response.

I know the rest of the world disagrees with me, but EVERY experience I have had with Chrome has been a disaster.  It took a lot of work to finally UNINSTALL it from my cell phone. I find  myself with zero limitations while not having Chrome---still they keep trying to cram it down my throat.

I don't have the web page up.  The only way I could get rid of it was to turn off my computer.   could not navigate to any of the other web pages I had open.  Not sure if a screen shop would work but I will try if I get it again.

That's what I suspected. If you get the same message again, you can get rid of it by following the instructions on the second link that Tom posted above. For more info about this scam, you may visit these articles and similar discussion here in our Community page:
