Hello Sue Vollmering and welcome to community.

Java may become important depending on the apps that you use on your device. There are lots of applications and websites that will not work unless you have Java installed. Java is not connected to Trend Micro Security. Java is owned by Oracle. Java is legitimate however scams using java as a bait keeps on coming up these days. If you haven't done any java update before and  doesn't affect your usual way on your computer, You can just ignore and close the pop-up.

For more information, We suggest you to contact Oracle Support or Java Support to identify if the pop-up you have is legitimate or not.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and have a great day!
