Yes, the Trend Micro program is an antivirus program and should be able to prevent malware infection. You mentioned that ByteFence detected a malicious file or program, can we ask for any information about that? Sending a screenshot of the notice may help.
It's possible that ByteFence detected a grayware or an adware (not an actual malware but gives annoying pop ups; sometimes misleading).
I have used Trend for two decades, & never had an infection. From what I've seen with the new update, I suggest you first open Trend & UPDATE before using your computer. There are many companies that pop up warnings about the numerous problems in your computer---which they will gladly fix after getting your CC#.
