A DELL technician disabled my Trend Micro anti-virus on start-up to help speed up my slow computer.
I asked him about it and he said you don't need it??? Still protected.

Totally confused about this.
I'm just a simple caveman when it comes to computers.

Hi lpakosh

Welcome to TM Home users Community, a public site where volunteers try to help each-other , also there are TM Employees that can give answers, that is only at working hours. I am just a volunteer!

The good way to do that you can see here!

Kind regards,
Tom

Hello lpakosh !

Actually, the Trend Micro program should be enabled upon start up as it is the time that the Security will be starting your protection. If it was disabled by a Tech due to computer performance issues, this may leave your computer vulnerable to attacks if in case you have not enabled the protection yet.

I would advise enabling the Trend Micro Security during start up again to make sure the program is working as expected.

All the best.

Okay thanks. I asked him and he said was still protected but I saw no TM icon in hidden tray. Don’t know swhy he did it. May help performance but disabling the anti-virus? Weird. Thought maybe it was still running somehow in background. Thanks.

Kudos to Tom for the correct answer.... Next time DO NOT let a technician, especially a Dell technician disable your Trend-Micro or any other start up programs. Just by them making the statement "You don't need it" just shows that have no clue and should  turn in their screwdrivers. Their statement is the dumbest thing I have heard in all my 35 years of field support......

Hello lpakosh

Thanks for your response.

You can try to look at the Startup menu on your PC to check if the Trend Micro program is set to run at startup or it has been disabled as well.

For windows 8, 8.1 and 10:
Open the Task Manager, (Press CTRL + ALT + DEL on the keyboard at the same time) and go to Startup and check any Trend Micro items on the list and check if it is Enabled or Disabled.

For Windows 7:
Press Windows + R to open the Run Command window, type msconfig and hit on OK. On the System Configuration panel, click on Boot and check if there's a Trend Micro item on the list.

Please be reminded that you need the Trend Micro program to keep your device protected from threats.

I hope this helps.

Best regards. :)

Thankful for the answers everyone.

Barbeerian, oh he went crazy on the disabling and deleting thing.

Im watching it wondering, well if you have to do this to get a new computer to run like a new computer it’s pretty lame.

Clicked and changed to "Extra Performance".
Rebooted.

TM did not reappear under "Startup" in Task Manager.

TM still does not appear in "Show Hidden Icons" bottom right of computer.
However, seems to be running.
Sorry I'm such a dummy.
Should have taken computers more seriously when I first got my Commodore 64! :P

Thanks Tom.
I did the 5 and then 4 and the icon appears.
After rebooting it's gone again.
I have no clue whether it's running in the background now.
Still seems to be.
So confusing to me.

Guess I'll re-install.

Hi lpakosh

Can you still open the Trend Micro program? If the program is working well, try to manually add it on the Startup folder in the location below:

C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Hi lpakosh

I think if you don't get what TM_Phebs said you better do a reinstall.

Reinstalling the latest version of Trend Micro Security program

Hope that this  goes well.

Okay.
Put:

C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Trend Micro Internet Security\Trend Micro Internet Security (shortcut)

Back into:

C:\Users\<yourusername>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Launches now on reboot again.
Thanks a lot for your patience and help everyone. :)

LOL.

To be fair to me, I've lived in the Bahamas for 15 years.

I only got my first Smart TV last year.

Tell all my Canadian friends "My TV can do this, and this and that".

"Yeah, we've had that for 10 years". DOH.

I am also kinda a Luddite.

P.S. This new Dell was my first computer in 10 years too. My first gen touch HP worked great for that long. Had no need to learn this stuff really.
Thanks again.
Cheers.
