Trend Micro runs continuously when I plug in USB devices

When I use a USB port to synch my ipod, or attach an external hard drive (new Seagate, no imported data), Trend Micro starts to run, using about 33% of CPU and >400 mb of memory. This continues for hours. I'm not sure what it is doing - if I custom scan the attached devices with Trend Micro they are completed in seconds.

At other times, it runs in the background, uses 1 to 2 % of CPU, which seems normal. What is Trend Micro doing and is there a way to stop it?
