Vpn runs permanently in background killing battery.

I have an iphone 13 running the latest software update and apps are up to date and the vpn is cutting my battery down by 8 hrs. It says it runs all the time in the background. I turn vpn off and the battery is good.

Hi @alanops2

Welcome to Trend Micro Home Users Community!

Trend Micro VPN Proxy one pro needs to run in the background to monitor your network usage especially when you are in public places and using Mobile/Cellular data.

To minimize your battery usage, you may use Wi-Fi over cellular data, and you may also use the right VPN protocol. To check your VPN Protocol, you can open the application and click settings then look for protocol.

Hope this helps.

@tm_prima I’m sorry, but you missed the point. VPN is suddenly, in the last few weeks, absolutely killing the phones battery. With VPN running I get about 5 hours from full to flat. With VPN off the phone runs normally for a full day even with heavy usage.

Hi @alanops2,

There are several factors that contributes to the amount of battery usage when using VPN which includes your cellular signal strength, phone model and the VPN encryption level.Normally, a 5-15% drop in battery life on your iOS device is expected when VPN is connected. It protects your phone by encrypting your connection, meaning all the sent and received data gets encrypted which uses processing power and in return drains the battery on your device.

In addition, poor signal strength results to increase in power usage since the phone needs to increase its signal receiver to maintain the connection. Weak signal forces your phone to use more power resulting to more battery consumption.

As recommended, you may use Wi-Fi over cellular data to minimize battery usage. Your phone draws more power when using cellular networks than Wi-Fi.

Hope this helps.
